ANCHORS

Bridge construction

Anchors

Anchors are used for subsequent prestressing of concrete in bridge construction.

According to the function they perform, anchors are divided into the following types:

  • normal (active and passive) anchors,
  • fixed anchors and
  • anchors for extension-teaching anchors.

A normal anchor is active when the cable is prestressed through it, and passive when it acts as a fixed anchor. A fixed anchor is used when it is possible to prestress on one side and when there are static and structural conditions for this. An anchor for extension or an extension anchor is used to extend an already prestressed cable or to extend a cable that is yet to be prestressed. Cables of the same type are usually extended, but a reduction from a larger to a smaller one is also possible.

The term “anchor ” refers to a set consisting of several basic elements.

These parts may include:

  • active, passive, fixed, or extension anchor head,
  • backing plate,
  • spirals,
  • wedges,
  • trumpet,
  • swage socket end
  • swage spring.
